The Importance of Off-jet Relativistic Kinematics in Gamma-ray Burst Jet Models
نویسنده
چکیده
Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are widely thought to originate from collimated jets of material moving at relativistic velocities. Emission from such a jet should be visible even when viewed from outside the angle of collimation. I summarize recent work on the special relativistic transformation of the burst quantities Eiso and Epeak as a function of viewing angle, where Eiso is the isotropic-equivalent energy of the burst and Epeak is the peak of the burst spectrum in the power νFν . The formulae resulting from this work serve as input for a Monte Carlo population synthesis method, with which I investigate the importance of off-jet relativistic kinematics as an explanation for a class of GRBs termed “X-ray Flashes” (XRFs). I do this in the context of several top-hat shaped variable openingangle jet models. I find that such models predict a large population of off-jet bursts that are observable and that lie away from the Epeak ∝ E 1/2 iso relation. The predicted burst populations are not seen in current datasets. I investigate the effect of the bulk γ value upon the properties of this population of off-jet bursts, as well as the effect of including an Ω0-Eγ correlation to jointly fit the Epeak ∝ E 1/2 iso and Epeak ∝ E β γ relations, where Ω0 is the opening solid angle of the GRB jet. I find that the XRFs seen by HETE-2 and BeppoSAX cannot be easily explained as classical GRBs viewed off-jet. I also find that an inverse correlation between γ and Ω0 has the effect of greatly reducing the visibility of off-jet events. Therefore, unless γ > 300 for all bursts or unless there is a strong inverse correlation between γ and Ω0, top-hat variable opening-angle jet models produce a significant population of bursts away from the Epeak ∝ E 1/2 iso and Epeak ∝ E β γ relations, in contradiction of current observations. The Importance of Off - Axis Beaming in Jet Models
— Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are widely thought to originate from collimated jets of material moving at relativistic velocities. Emission from such a jet should be visible even when viewed from outside the angle of collimation. Using Monte Carlo population synthesis methods and including the effects of this off-axis beaming, we can compare various GRB jet models against the global properties of ob...
متن کاملOn the Kinematics of GRB980425 and its association with SN1998bw
In this paper I put forward a model in which GRB980425 is both associated with SN1998bw and is also a standard canonical (long; ∼ seconds) gamma-ray burst. Herein it is argued that if gamma-ray bursts are relativistic jets with the fastest moving material at the core, then the range of observed jet inclinations to the line-of-sight produces a range in the observed properties of GRBs, i.e. the l...
متن کاملSevere Constraints on Off-axis Grb Jets in Type Ibc Supernovae from Late-time Radio Observations
It has been suggested that the peculiar properties of the luminous Type Ic supernova SN 1998bw and perhaps its low-energy gamma-ray burst GRB 980425 may be understood if they originated in a standard gamma-ray burst explosion viewed far from the axis of the relativistic jet. In this scenario, strong radio emission is predicted from the jet on a timescale 1 to 10 years after the explosion as it ...

متن کاملTHE PROPAGATION AND ERUPTION OF RELATIVISTIC JETS FROM THE STELLAR PROGENITORS OF GRBs
New twoand three-dimensional calculations are presented of relativistic jet propagation and break out in massive Wolf-Rayet stars. Such jets are thought responsible for gamma-ray bursts. As it erupts, the highly relativistic jet core (3 to 5 degrees; Γ & 100) is surrounded by a cocoon of less energetic, but still moderately relativistic ejecta (Γ ∼ 15) that expands and becomes visible at larger...
